How To Solve iPad Connection Issues
Some days ago I bought an iPad (3G+ Wi-Fi model). I used the tablet for two days without any problem until this morning, when I noticed several issues with the connection to the web with both Wi-Fi and cellular data networks. I read this is a common problem and in a note on the support site, Apple reports that a small number of iPad users are experiencing similar issues connecting to Wi-Fi networks and suggests some workarounds to solve it.
I followed all the steps described on that article but the connectivity problems were still there because as I said, my issue is not only limited to the Wi-Fi network but also involves 3G connection. So, after many attempts, I found a way that works in my case in order to reactivate the connections when this kind of problem occurs. If you have the same issue try to follow this process to fix it. First of all if you want to use a Wi-Fi network to connect to the web you need to turn off the cellular data network (Settings > Cellular Data) and the Wi-Fi connection. Than you have to turn on only the Wi-Fi connection to make it work again.
The same process applies if you want to browse the web using a 3G connection. Turn off both cellular data and Wi-Fi connections and then turn on only the cellular data connection. If the problem with the cellular network persists, after doing this process, you have to connect the iPad to the power adapter (it won’t work via USB only) and than wait a few seconds. This way, your 3G connection will work again.
Please share your story here adding a comment, tell us if you have any problem with the connection and if this solution works for you too!
Thanks! Very useful info. Please next time link to the apple support page also?
As I’ve told you in a twitter reply did you check that the mac address of the wi-fi card is always detected ?
Two times, with the iPhone, I got to send it to the support since it got “disconnected” from the main board, so moving the device it made “false contact”.
p.s. = DIGG is way better than a facebook’s “like” to spread words on an issue …
Actually i do not have iPad yet but after your article, i have some doubt. It feels iPad is such a bug box for this time. So what do you think Antonio? Is it bug or something normal for this tech?
By the way, @yitz: Why he should link to the Apple’s support page?
I don’t think iPad is a nice idea. First of all, the OS is very limited, not multithread. Furthermore, no USB connections. And now the problems you report.
Thanks.
Hi,
I don’t have any problems with the wi-fi.
but my 3G connection never worked.
I bought a micro sim from Swisscom (yeah, I’m Swiss ^^)
and it could never connect to swisscom.
I returned to their shop yesterday, they tried everything, including changing the sim card by another one.
and still nothing,
do you have an idea ?
Thanks for this great hint, you made my day!
Hope to get this issue solved by the next update…
Haven’t had any real problem with wifi (except occasionally having to reenter my weep key/password). Have had real problems with cellular data (Rogers in Canada). Currently the problem has been escalated and they told me that “they will get back to me within 48 hours”. Tried your trick and actually go link working twice for very short bursts but it doesn’t seem to want to hold the connection. Any other ideas???
Thanks, but after spending over $1,100 for the Ipad I feel raped by Apple. This thing should work right out of the box and it doesn’t. I plan to return mine today and either get another unit(if Best Buy will allow it) or get a full refund…
Agree Bob, They KNOW there is a BIG problem!
The IPAD connection problem is REAL! I have called Apple Support twice,,,,,, they blame it on my router, On phone with router company….. PAID SUPPORT!…. and they say it is not their problem. APPLE NEEDS TO RECTIFY THIS PROBLEM… They are passing the buck and they know there is a BIG problem with WIFI connections. What a scam they are.
I also feel raped and despise apple. I bought an iPad from the uk and living in south Africa where iPad is not yet available. Now my 3G connection does not work and my iPad reboots every 2 minutes. It cost with US$1′too after shipping and duties and now I have no support and need township it back to the UK for them to have look at it. One very expensive mistake buying one of these stupid bugged devices!!!!

My Ipad is going back to PC world tonight and if they can’t fix it they can refund or replace. I’ve had it 3 months and it is a big disappointment re mobile connection. Even at home we had to get a new router from our ISP before it would work (after hours and hours online to netcare support). It has been back to PC world for an upgrade and I hoped the problem was fixed – until we took it on holiday – out of 6 locations we had one good connection, one dodgy connection and four failures. I can hardly insist airports and hotels change their routers just to be compatible with my Ipad. The whole point of buying it was its mobility. I have even started accosting other Ipad users when I see them and asking if they have issues – most do not so perhaps an exchange machine will work. So far mine is the world’s most expensive scrabble playing machine – a great app but not worth £500!
I have had my iPad for about 4 months now without a single issue, I use it every day at home on a Linksys router and when I go out to wifi enabled coffee shops also had no problems. I bought the 32 gig wireless version without 3G as I use my cellphone to tether 3G to my iPad. I really am very happy with this device and the programs available just blow me away. Could the problem be related directly with your iPads having 3G built in? I also use my nokia Bluetooth enabled GPS which came with a previous phone on my iPad. I am living in South Africa and bought the unit for 500 pounds in London new.
Just got a 16gb iPad and cannot get connected. I understand that my computer is WiFi capable but get a no connection message. what am I doing wrong. Not real computer literate…..
Just got an ipad for xmas, bit disappointing, spent now about 1 day on getting it connected to the internet. Apple cannot help…..and hung up on me. Slowly getting to the point to get a refund. The thing is just to much work to get this going, and very limited applications besides ” shopping’.
I have the same problem no connection with wi fi and 3g.
I tried to follow the the steps described above. Wifi is working but not with 3G.
What i did with 3g, I removed the card and placed it back, and now it works.
Typical of Apple: the customer is the problem.
Yeah I got the solution. You have to use your iPad hanging from a tree upside down and making sure you use a nylon rope, because the normal ones once wet conduct electricity.
I work in the amazonean basin, and let me tell you that the iPad is one of the best things i have ever bought. I have an iPad with 3G and nevertheless we do not have 3G signal we do have cellular signal and the iPad works very well, leting me to be conected with the world.
No USB? Yes the iPad has no USB port, but who needs it? I transfer all the doccuments and information by mail or connecting me by WiFi with the computer or laptop. I think the USB memmory devices are becoming more and more like the old floppy disk unusable.
I’ve had my new ipad a month, at the beginning no problems with connection in the last week I’ve had nothing but problems. Already tried a complete factory reset nope. I turn it off then back on the internet works for roughly 5 minutes then drops out. I have an Iphone 3g it does not have problems connecting to my home wifi.
OK, so, turn off WiFi on my phone first then the personal hot spot on my phone and then what?? thanks
