Delicious Is a Dead Man Walking
According to recent rumors it seems that Yahoo! is going to close (or sell) Delicious, the popular social bookmarking web service acquired by the web giant founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo in 2005.
If the news of its closure was true, Delicious would terminate its career in a fairly disappointing way after eight years of glorious activity (the site was founded by Josua Schachter in 2003). It’s a common perception of having to do with a service that is in a state of almost total neglect now. The site’s management is not all that it should be since a long time, especially as for the monitoring of bookmarks added by users.
The page dedicated to popular bookmarks (delicious/popular), which is one of the most visited pages on the famous social bookmarking service that counts something like 66 million monthly pageviews, is continuously flooded with spam and in the headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, no one seems to notice it.
So, Delicious is a dead man walking waiting for someone to put an end to his agony. I only hope that, under the conditions prevailing in the site, Yahoo! has the decency to to pull the plug soon.
Is there any information (or another rumors) what is the approximate date of that potential closure? The only way how to preserve all the bookmarks is periodic backup. I have bookmarked all the resources for my diploma thesis and I don’t want them to become just some deleted issues, or “del-issues” :-)
No information about that. But other rumors report Yahoo! could sell delicious and not close it.
This are only stupid panic causing rumors ;] even >IF< they would close it they would give you many months of backup, possibly even years.
I hope someone will buy it, because it’s still a great service. The oft-mentioned Diigo doesn’t really measure up.
I agree with you.
I’m not sure why you guys are saying that Diigo doesn’t measure up? Diigo has more features like highlighting and sticky notes for example. What does Delicious have that Diigo doesn’t – in terms of function?
I use both services but I’ve always felt that Delicious needed a facelift.

Is Delicious being shut down? And should I be worried about my data?
- No, we are not shutting down Delicious. While we have determined that there is not a strategic fit at Yahoo!, we believe there is a ideal home for Delicious outside of the company where it can be resourced to the level where it can be competitive.
That’s not the problem. The real problem is the state of neglect of the site. Why is the site so full of spam?
For example look at http://delicious.com/popular today’s page. There are a lot of spam links: Vakıfbank Kredi Özellikleri ve Kriterler
Actually, it IS the problem. Your post reads: “According to recent rumors it seems that Yahoo! is going to close (or sell) Delicious [...]” I just gave you a link from Delicious’ own blog stating they are not closing.
As far as the neglect goes, that’s obvious and has been a well known issue for a LONG time since Yahoo! took it over. If you even took the time to research your post, you’d have found a post from a Delicious worker that even stated he was no longer going to be working on various elements of the site because of how large scale the problem became.
it will probably be caled Bingelicious, and find a proper death
Delicious is great and I don’t think it will never close! That’s my opinion!
It’s not so expensive to keep a service like this!
It’s true. It’s a shame.
The “popular” page of delicious is unique of it’s kind: it’s a great indicator of what’s going on in the webdev community.
They’re really ruining it for all of us.. and as someone writes above…. it can’t cost that much money to keep this service running… and spam free. Come on.
I have already switched to another pretty similar, free and as good as delicious. Check on Diigo: http://www.diigo.com
