How to Claim Your Website or Blog on Alexa

Claiming Site on Alexa

Update: Unfortunately Alexa no longer allows you to claim websites unless you have a paid account.

This is a short tutorial on how to claim your website or blog on Alexa. In my opinion, Alexa has no real affect on your website’s ranking or indexing. It simply is a good measurement to see how you are doing. Obviously you will want to rely on other tools such as Google Webmaster Tools, Analytics, Web CEO, Moz, etc… to monitor how you stack up. I have watched and monitored Alexa with dozens of sites and it always reflects pretty well with my other tools. If your site is doing well, gaining traffic, attaining backlinks etc.. then your Alexa score should be going up… and vice versa.  But do not rely entirely on Alexa as most of the rankings are based on the data it collects from those who have the Alexa toolbar installed.

Step 1

If you have an account on Alexa already, then login first and click on “Add Site” under your dashboard. Then go here: http://www.alexa.com/pro/subscription. If you don’t have an account yet, you can also visit that same page.

Step 2

Click on the “Sign Up” button under the Free plan. (You have to do this even if you already have an account. Seems to be a slight bug right now with Alexa)

Step 3

Enter your domain and click “Continue.”

Step 4

You now have to verify your domain. The first option, you can download their file and place it at the root of your website. The 2nd option is to place a meta tag on your website. I will be doing the 2nd one in my example along with the WordPress SEO plugin. Copy the verification ID to your clipboard.

Alexa Verify

Step 5

Now bounce over to WordPress and we will go down to the SEO tab, click into “Dashboard” and paste your verification ID into the Alexa Verification ID box.

Step 6

Now go back over to Alexa and click on the “Verify my ID” button. Make sure you clear your cache plugins if you have any running in WordPress.

Verify my ID

If it works, then you will see a success message.

Then press on the “Continue” button.

Step 7

You will then want to at least fill out your Site Title, Description, Country, and I suggest the site owner name. Then click on the “Continue” button.

Step 8

You have now claimed your website on Alexa! Click the go do dashboard to see your listing.

  1. Alexa ranking is most important for a website, the first condition of Alexa ranking is submitting your site to Alexa. This is a so helpful post for about it, Thanks for nice share.

    • Ya, we have a notice at the top of this post. Alexa unfortunately no longer lets you claim a website on a free plan. You can pay however, claim it, then cancel :)

  2. Unfortunately, Alexa no longer allows the new member to claim websites unless having to subscribe their pro plan. the worse is, in their plan didn’t have an option for free…
